Pervez Musharraf

Pervez Musharraf (born 11 August 1943) is a Pakistani politician and retired four-star general who served as the 13th President of Pakistan from 2001 until 2008. He also served as the 10th Chief of Army Staff from 1998 until 2007.

Early Life and Military Career

Musharraf was born in Delhi, British India (now India) to a family of ethnic Pashtuns. He grew up in Karachi, Pakistan after the partition of India in 1947. He received his military training from the Pakistan Military Academy and the Command and Staff College.

Musharraf rose through the ranks of the military and served in various important positions, including as the Director-General of Military Operations during the Kargil conflict between Pakistan and India in 1999.

Coup d'état and Presidency

On 12 October 1999, Musharraf staged a military coup against the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and assumed power as the Chief Executive of Pakistan. In 2001, he declared himself as the President of Pakistan and held the position until 2008.

During his presidency, Musharraf implemented various reforms in the country, including the devolution of powers to the local government, liberalization of the economy, and the strengthening of the judiciary. He also took steps to improve Pakistan's relations with India and the United States.

Later Life and Return to Pakistan

In 2016, Musharraf was granted bail in the treason case and allowed to travel abroad for medical treatment. He returned to Pakistan in 2018 and was arrested upon his arrival. However, he was released on bail in 2019 and has since been living in Pakistan.

Musharraf was died on 5 February 2023 due to serious health injury.
